I run the GAV (choke knob) open about 1/4 turn on Zenith one and two carbs after warm up. The tractor carburetor is extremely adjustable, but you need to identify and understand how to work with each circuit. I think you are saying that he meant the oil bath air cleaner was necessary for an updraft carb, and that might be true, but I didn't read his premise that way. After many loving hours of labor I finally got the old girl running, BUT after running for a few seconds, the carb floods itself and starts dripping gas out the bottom and shuts down. I don't think that adjustment is the main problem. The cars start easy, if you retared the spark from the steering wheel, and choke 3/4 out.
